RECIPE: GAU, BUT IN A MICRO.

Every culture has their spin on “mochi” and gau is definitely Chinese mochi for the win. What if I told you that you didn’t have to wait for the Lunar New Year to enjoy gau, in the comfort of your own… MICROWAVE?

Yes, it’s true! Someone gave my Mom a microwavable gau recipe and we made it, three times now and every single time? DROOL.

Microwavable Gau

Prep time: 10 min.
Cook time: 6 min.

Makes 1 large serving, slivered into 4 pieces, perfect for sharing.

let’s make it!

ingredients

• 1 box (16 oz) Wong Tong (Chinese Brown Sugar)
• 1 box (16 oz) Mochiko Flour
• 1/4 cup Oil
• 2 3/4 cup Water
• Sesame seeds to top!

PS! Don’t be scared by the wong tong ingredient, you can find it all Asian Grocery stores or Asian food aisles, it’s a pseudo Chinese brown sugar.

But don’t substitute it, this makes the flavor legit.

how to:

1. Mix the Wong Tong and water until it dissolves. Cool for about 5 minutes.

2. Add in Mochiko Flour, making sure all clumps are out. Add in oil. This will help smooth the mix.

3. Pour the mix into a microwavable bowl and microwave three times. All at 6 minutes, microwave at 100%, 75% and then 50% heat. I’d recommend using a taller microwaveable bowl so the gau doesn’t ooze out (cause it can if the bowl is too shallow!).

4. Sprinkle sesame seeds. Cool for an hour, then devour.

“Every year I host a Chinese New Year party. We wear red, we play games and of course, we EAT. This is the perfect, simple tradition for me to make to share with all of my friends!”
